Colonie Central High School incoming freshmen kicked off their high school journey by completing a weeklong orientation program. SMART (Students Making a Responsible Tomorrow) Orientation helps students make a smooth transition from middle school into high school.

Beyond traditional orientation lessons, these sessions offer meaningful experiences designed to boost academic success, foster social connections, and engage students in Colonie’s tradition of community service and civic leadership.

"High school isn’t just the next grade up, it’s the bridge to adulthood,” said Colonie Central High School Associate Principal Stephanie Luce. “Our goal during orientation is to give students the confidence, academic tools, and emotional resilience they need to cross that bridge with momentum.”

Another key aspect of this year’s orientation are ADAPT (Actions Draw All People Together) sessions, brought to students in partnership with Bring on the Spectrum. ADAPT is an interactive program that helps students better understand and connect with neurodivergent individuals. The goal is to help create a school culture where differences are understood, students feel valued and everyone has the opportunity to belong.

The orientation concluded with a meaningful hands on service project, as students gathered at the Midway Fire Department. While they were at the firehouse, students learned about the work that police, EMS and firefighters do in our community. They had the opportunity to speak to first responders, try on gear, and explore their vehicles. Students also created bags filled with soothing items to help first responders comfort children during emergency calls.

This hands-on day of service highlighted the district's tradition of civic leadership and community connection just in time for the start of the new school year.
