South Colonie Central School District is pleased to announce that longtime educator and administrator Michael Marohn will become the district’s director of student support services, pending Board of Education approval at its Sept. 15 meeting. Marohn will begin the new role Oct. 1.

Marohn brings nearly 30 years of experience in education, all of which has been in South Colonie. He has served as principal of Sand Creek Middle School since 2017 and, since 2021, has also served as the district’s administrator for alternative education programs.

In his new role, Marohn will oversee Student Support Services, including special education programming, mental health and wellness services, and the district’s alternative education programs. His experience as a classroom teacher, building principal and district administrator gives him a broad understanding of the needs of students, families and staff across the district. “Mike brings a tremendous amount of experience, knowledge and perspective to this position,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Perry. “His nearly 30 years in education, extensive leadership experience within South Colonie and deep understanding of our students, programs and community make him uniquely prepared for this role. Mike has built strong relationships across our district and understands the importance of bringing people and programs together to support students. His experience leading both a school and our alternative education programs will be a tremendous asset as he takes on this important districtwide role. We are excited to have Mike continue his service to South Colonie in this new capacity and look forward to the new perspective he will bring to the department.”

Before becoming principal of Sand Creek, Marohn served as principal of Saddlewood Elementary School, and associate principal and academic supervisor for mathematics and technology at Colonie Central High School. He began his career in South Colonie at Forest Park Elementary School, where he worked in a special education classroom as an inclusion teacher.

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue serving South Colonie in this new role,” Marohn said. “I have had the privilege of working with students, families and staff at nearly every level of our district, beginning my career in a special education classroom and continuing through building and district leadership. Those experiences have given me a deep understanding of the importance of strong relationships, collaboration and having the right support in place for every student. I look forward to bringing that experience to Student Support Services, working alongside our dedicated staff and continuing to find ways to strengthen the programs and services we provide to students and families across the district.”

As part of the transition, Rachel Fazioli will serve as interim principal of Sand Creek Middle School. Fazioli has been part of the school’s leadership team since 2023 and will work closely with Marohn to provide continuity for students, staff and families. An administrative dean position will also be posted to fill Fazioli’s current role.

Marohn will work with the Student Support Services leadership team throughout October to ensure a smooth transition before officially assuming the full responsibilities of the position Nov. 1.
