ELL Students Visit HVCC for College Readiness Experience

Junior and senior English Language Learners from Colonie Central High School visited Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) on October 16 as part of a college exploration and readiness opportunity.
Students were joined by ENL staff members Stacey Swanson, Angel Cutas, Sohachi Sakamoto and Kristin Mesick, College and Career counselor, as they toured campus facilities, including classrooms, student study areas, the library, and dining spaces. The visit offered students a firsthand look at a college environment and the resources available to support student success.
In addition to the tour, students attended three informational sessions led by HVCC staff. The sessions covered admissions, financial aid, the application process, and what to expect as a college student.
Following the visit, several seniors received assistance from Mrs. Mesick and completed instant admission applications to HVCC. Many juniors also expressed interest in applying next fall. Students remarked about the diversity they saw in all areas on campus, and were excited about being given this opportunity.
“This visit helped students envision themselves in a college setting, and understand the steps needed to get there,” said Swanson. “Seeing our students get excited about future possibilities and take the next step to submit applications was a wonderful outcome of this experience.”
South Colonie remains committed to providing experiences that support college and career readiness for all students.
