Colonie Art Students Join Local Fundraiser with 150 Mini Masterpieces

During the final days of the school year, Colonie Central High School art students put their creativity to work for a great cause. With guidance from art teachers Christina Norris, Virginia Gerhardt, Nina Abrams, and Monica Hughes, students from multiple classes created original 3x3-inch canvases to donate to the annual 3x3 at Arlene’s fundraiser.
Hosted by Arlene’s Artist Materials on Fuller Road, the fundraiser brings together hundreds of small artworks made by local artists, students, and community members. Each piece is sold for $10, and all proceeds go to a local nonprofit. This year’s beneficiary is Capital Roots, an organization focused on improving access to healthy food and supporting community gardens across the Capital Region.
The theme given to students was “Love the Earth,” tying in with Capital Roots’ mission. Together, Colonie students created and donated around 150 original pieces.
“This project is a great example of what happens when teachers connect classroom learning to the real world,” said STEAM Supervisor Greg Bearup. “They gave students the chance to contribute to a meaningful cause and support a local business that’s been a longtime supporter of the arts. It’s a win-win for our kids and our community.”
The 3x3 artwork will be displayed anonymously at Arlene’s, where the public can stop by, view the collection, and purchase pieces. To learn more, visit Arlene's 3x3 Fundraiser.
