Celebrating National Library Week in South Colonie

This week, schools throughout the district embraced National Library Appreciation Week. Elementary students participated in themed dress-up days and special storytimes, with Shaker Road capping off the week by inviting students to dress like librarians! Many schools highlighted a "book of the day," sparking excitement around reading and reinforcing the important role libraries play in student learning.
At the high school, students took part in Library Spirit Week, which included activities designed to engage students and promote the use of library resources. A library survey allowed students to share their feedback and ideas, with more than 140 responses submitted. “I see every day how valuable the library is to our students,” said Rosie Hren, high school librarian . “The library serves as a place where students feel supported, inspired, and comfortable being themselves. They have access to a wide range of materials, and it is where they build essential research skills and digital literacy.”
A favorite spot for students, school libraries continue to foster educational growth while giving students the necessary tools to navigate their academic careers. “The library is an awesome space—I love coming here during my free periods to get homework done and be with friends.” said a student when commenting on their anonymous library satisfaction survey. National Library Week served as a reminder of the critical role school libraries play in fostering curiosity, community, and a lifelong love of reading. Whether through a themed outfit or a thoughtful student survey response, it’s clear that library spaces continue to make a meaningful impact on students every day.
