Serving up smiles: Colonie’s annual pasta dinner and senior performance night

Each year, Colonie Central High School proudly hosts its annual pasta dinner for senior citizens, providing an evening filled with a meal and entertainment. This long-standing tradition features a variety of performances, with this year's highlight being the beloved musical Mary Poppins which is set to open this weekend.
The pasta dinner, paired with a performance by Colonie High School students, has grown in popularity over the years. The level of interest can vary depending on the musical chosen, with well-known productions like Mary Poppins attracting a larger crowd. Regardless, the event remains a special tradition that brings together students, staff, and local seniors each year.
“This event is a wonderful example of how we can connect generations within our community,” said William Behrle, principal of Colonie Central High School. “It’s heartwarming to see students working alongside seniors, giving back to the people who have shaped our community. I know many of the seniors were very excited to preview the show Mary Poppins.”
This year, 37 students volunteered their time to help make the event a success. Volunteers come from a variety of school organizations such as the Colonie Ambassadors, Key Club, National Honor Society, Art Club, and ICARE. Students in Mr. Boham’s Participation in Government class are also required to participate as part of their coursework. These student volunteers are eager to give back to the community, as many are looking for volunteer opportunities within the school.
The event, which is free for seniors, welcomes attendees from a variety of local senior centers. This year, over 240 seniors joined us from Beltrone Living Center, Lisha Kill Seniors, Village of Colonie, Shaker Pointe, Colonie Senior Citizens Club, Bishop Broderick Apartments, Loudonville Assisted Living, Christ Our Light Seniors, Thunder Road Seniors, Towers of Colonie, and the Menands Senior Club. For those seniors who do not have transportation, the South Colonie Transportation Department generously provides a bus service to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to attend.
