South Colonie celebrates Saddlewood third grader as First In Math Grand Champion

The South Colonie Board of Education recognized Emilio James-Maisonet during its meeting on Tuesday, February 4, as part of the President’s Spotlight, honoring his exceptional achievement as the district’s first-everFirst In Math Grand Champion.
Emilio, a third-grade student in Mrs. Killiany’s class at Saddlewood Elementary, earned the prestigious title of Grand Champion in early January. This accomplishment is awarded to students who solve more than 30,000 math problems in a single school year, earning over 10,000 stickers on the First In Math® digital platform. Emilio’s dedication and hard work make him the first student in South Colonie history to reach this milestone.
“Emilio saw a video of another student outside of our district being recognized for achieving this milestone and was immediately inspired to work toward that goal,” said Saddlewood Principal Stacey Wranesh. “His achievement is a testament to his perseverance and passion for learning and serves as an inspiration for other students in our district.”
The First In Math program, created by inventor Robert Sun, uses game-based learning to develop mathematical confidence and skills in students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and beyond.
In 2022, New York State made First In Math available free of charge to all public schools. Since then, South Colonie students and teachers have used the platform to enhance computational skills and foster a love for math.
Emilio’s family members were present at the Board of Education meeting to celebrate his accomplishment.
Congratulations to Emilio on his achievement.Thank you for inspiring South Colonie students to aim high and achieve their best!
