Checking out more than books: ELL students uncover a world of resources at Colonie Library

A group of 31 English Language Learners (ELLs) from Colonie Central High School recently enjoyed a field trip to the Colonie Town Library, where they explored the library’s resources, participated in creative activities, and learned about the many services designed to support speakers of other languages.
The day began with a warm welcome and breakfast, setting the stage for an informative session led by library staff. Students were introduced to the library’s extensive online resources, including e-books, research tools, and a new test prep program aimed at helping them achieve their academic goals
“One of the most eye-opening moments for many students was discovering just how many books and materials the library offers in their native languages,” said high school English Language teacher Stacey Swanson. “For some, it was the first time they realized they could access stories and information in a language that feels like home. Seeing their excitement as they signed up for library cards and planned future visits was truly inspiring.”
Beyond exploring books, students took part in a hands-on community service project, crafting heartfelt Valentine’s Day cards for local senior citizens. To commemorate their visit, they also painted personalized keychains—unique, colorful keepsakes symbolizing their journey of discovery.
This experience was more than just a field trip; it was an opportunity for ELL students to connect with their community, unlock new learning opportunities, and gain confidence in navigating resources available to them.
“The Colonie Library is more than a place to borrow books—it’s a hub for learning, connection, and support,” Swanson added. “We are fortunate to have such an inclusive and resourceful space in our community.”
